This month, when we celebrate our national day of Thanksgiving, is an appropriate time to remember that over the years St. Luke Lutheran Church has benefited again and again from the various programs of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
Not long ago Thrivent matched the $700 the St. Luke Youth raised to cover the cost of attendance at the High School Youth Discipleship Camp at Concordia University.
Thrivent service teams have at various times conducted yard sales that qualified for matching funds for the income produced. On one occasion the proceeds were used to purchase the commercial refrigerator for our church kitchen. Another time the revenues replenished the church “Love Fund”, and another time the monies sup-ported the Stephen Ministry program in part. On another occasion a Thrivent work party used funds from Thrivent to buy the lumber to build the tiered seating for the choir and the platform for the organ console. A work party also tapped Thrivent to buy the carpet they installed in the church youth room. The large TV cart and other utility carts were purchased as kits with Thrivent dollars and assembled by a Thrivent service team. Twice a Thrivent service team sponsored a car rally for youth and provided pizza for those participating in the event. The last time it was necessary to replace locks and implement a new key structure for all the door locks at St. Luke, the cost was covered by a grant from Thrivent. St. Luke received $1375 from Thrivent in 2012 and so far this year has received $1345. These dollars came from the “Choice Dollars” program through which Thrivent members can direct fraternal dollars to an or-ganization of their choice. Thrivent has set aside $15 million to double all “Choice Dollars” directed to churches during the months of October and November of this year or until the $15 million has been awarded, whichever comes first. Thrivent will again be a sponsor of the Claremont Symphony Messiah community sing along on Sunday, December 22, and a concert for youth followed by a luncheon and educational program in our parish hall on Saturday, January 25, 2014. The concerts take place at Bridges Hall of Music on the campus of Pomona College. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been selected as one of the 2013 “World’s Most Ethical Companies” by the Ethisphere Institute. Thrivent Financial was named to the prestigious list for the second consecutive year as a result of its leadership in promoting ethical business standards as well as for introducing innovative ideas to benefit the public. Thrivent Congregational Advocates for our Church are: Olga Schulteis, E.J. Morgan, and Rev. Timothy Seals. There are five unfilled spots for any other members who would like to serve in this capacity. Congre-gational Advocates each receive an additional $25 of “Choice Dollars” they can designate to a cause of their choice.
